How good is the x300!

Just got my Daimler lwb 4.0 back from having a new steering column motor fitted. It's been a couple of weeks since i've driven it as my daily drivers are a very nice merc c class and Ford Kuga.

Every time I get in the x300 I get a new shock at how refined and smooth it is compared to two very good modern cars.

I don't think I have ever driven a saloon car that matches it in terms of refinement.

I spent nearly two years without my Sovereign V12, while saving for some restoration work. You can imagine how I felt when I got it back on the road in August....

Nigel,

I noticed your sig refers to a 1996 XJ12 Sovereign. Is that a typo? I thought the Sovereigns were all 3.2 or 4,0 whilst the V12s were just called XJ12?

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,
No not a typo - mine is a Sovereign V12. The information I was given was these were made to special order and mine is one of 56 made. Dissecting the chassis number seems to suggest it is an XJ6! But it is registered as a Sovereign XJ12. It has every option possible, including headlight washers and cup holders in the front armrest which are quite rare.
I have always felt very lucky to own and enjoy this wonderful machine!

I have an 87' Daimler xj40 and when I drive that I feel wonderfully relaxed. self levelling suspension etc. I feel you have to drive a modern car every day to really respect and understand how good our jags (and Daimlers) are

I had an ancient X300 3.2 Executive for a while that I used as a daily driver. It had done a quarter of a million miles, the body was shabby and it was nothing special to look at. A worn out old shed one step from the breakers yard.
But the drive was still sublime!

Nigel,

It sounds a wonderful car! I hadn't heard about these Sovereign V12s. I had thought there were only 56 non-USA LWB XJ12 made in total. Have you got a link to any info that details the Sovereigns? Tks.

If it decodes as an XJ6, I guess you've got an "F" or a "J" in the fifth character of your VIN, rather than an "H"?

Did Jaguar put a "Sovereign" (as per the 6 -cylinder) or an "XJ12" (as per the 12-cylinder) badge on the boot?

Cheers

Paul

It genuinely was our main family car for about 10 years, it even did a few camping trips!

It is really only used for special occasions and holidays now, all year round though - I'm proud to report this car is still be used as it is meant to be! - particularly our February trips to the Highlands...
