The only place I could find another picture of that kit is my other digital hangout: Xj40.com.
Comments there also suggest late XJS: https://www.xj40.com/viewtopic.php?t=1161

Makes sense: it contains the identical bits 'n' bobs as the X300's toolkit. Could this mean it was used on the last XJS build years that overlapped with X300 production??

Maybe we're not trusted to change any spark plugs!!

Materials used for the case & tools in the kit suggest early/mid-'90s.
Diesel (S-/X-type) engines weren't introduced until quite a few years later....

from research i think its from an XJR ( xj40 style ) or similar....

well I disagree all round

I think it is from a LATE XJS, , post 1994 MY, after the kit was deleted as a standard item, this was the option you could buy at an extra cost

NO Xj40 has this style toolkit, and XJS had the same kit up until 1994 when XJ40 went out of production

300 had the under-bonnet kit, so XJS had a the boxed cheaper kit as a cost option

I have one of these late XJS kits here for sale if any one wants, BB's is only the third one of these I have ever seen

i appreciate your input, and logic

my only comment is that the case fits my late ( 1994 ) XJ40 perfectly , as it fits behind the elastic strap in the rear valance , the rear boot trim ( as you will know ) has a relief cutout for the toolkit box, but not necessarily with the above contents layout , the plot thickens

BB, the XJ40 tool case outer is exactly the same, so will fit the late 40 recess and retaining strap as shown

late XJS optional extra, take it from me!!!

thats what i thought so to ,

and thanks to a fellow jag member, i managed to get the retaining strap in the post today , my my car wasn't actually optioned with the ' fixed ' toolkit ,but fitted within 5 minutes of the postman handing it to me , lol

i also have a standard XJ40 toolkit, and several XJS ' handled ' toolkits , i just can't seem to stop buying them for that one part that might be slightly better condition than the one i have , lol, and then there are the ones with the sunroof crank handle, even rarer

one thing to note, the case came with the recess for the crank , but no sunroof meant no crank , so a kit isnt ' incomplete ' unless you have a sunroof and no crank handle, lol

Exactly my thoughts: as written before the kit's contents are an exact match to what the X300 (which one could consider a post-1994 MY per se) toolkit features.

BTW, does look good in your '40, though!

that's an early face lift XJ40 toolkit, circa 1991, wrong pliers too, sorry to be a pedant!!
