stujags,

There might be a bit of confusion here.

The temp sender (which tells the instrument gauge) is different from the temp sensor (which snds signal to the ecu for fuelling)

So the engine might be 90 degrees but if the sensor is faulty, the ecu could still overfuel thinking it's cold.

Also, when you disconnect the sensor plug (the 2-wire one), you have to bridge the wiring plug to send the car into open-loop fuelling to test if that affects the starting and hot running.

If you have the means, also read the resistance settings directly off of the sensor itself at cold and when hot. We can then tell if the sensor is working.

Also what are the 02 sensors plotting when the car is running and with fluctuating revs?

If the car runs exactly the same with the MAF disconnected, that is concerning and could well point to the MAF. But you obviously don't want to be buying one yet before you've eliminated the other issues.

Did you check the injector sprays, plugs or plug wells etc?

Cheers

Update on Rusty, it appears to have been the Maf. The thing that made me think it was worth taking a chance was my air flow readings were zero. Plug in new Maf and she runs great again. I think it was caused by stuck thermostat and cold running engine causing excessive engine breathing, vapours that fried Maf. All good now, wouldn’t have been brave enough to buy Maf without info from this page. Thank you

stujags,

So glad you've got it sorted! Well done! It takes a lot to break an AJ16 engine!

Cheers
