Saggy Headlining.

My X330 had the sagging headlining. I have finally got around to replacing it. It looks good, but now the car will not start! Obviously, I have disturbed something. As the car has been standing, the battery was flat so I have recharged it and even attempted to jump start it. No good. The symptoms seem to me to indicate a security fault. The car now locks and unlocks with the key fob. But on the second press of the locking button, I get the peep sound but nothing else, a similar action on the third press fails to light the headlamps. Now when I insert the key into the ignition, I get a gentle pinging warning sound. There is no further reaction from the starter motor when I ask it to start. I have managed to re-code the radio and all other electrical services appear to work. At least I can tinker with the radio playing. I have also posted this saga on Jaguarforums and am following their advice. Are there any Jaguar security experts out there?? Alec G.

When you turn the key (but not attempted the start) so that the lights go into test mode, does the check engine light go out leaving the oil and ignition on? If so the security module has forgotten the chip in your key
If this is what’s happening then it should have a ODB code stored.
I know this because I have two keys. Both operate all the locks, but only one starts the car!

That is exactly what is happening. All the warning lamps come on then they extinguish leaving the battery(ignition) lamp and oil pressure lamp on, together with the hand brake and seat belt warning. The latter two extinguish when I fasten the seat belt and release the hand brake. I have two sets of keys and they act exactly the same!

Yep the car is immobilised.
It is possible that the module has forgotten your codes as the battery was flat. The module does have a battery of its own but it’s over 25years old now!
I guess you had a light on (interior \ boot) whilst repairIng the headliner or maybe just having the car unlocked left it in a ready state.
Try reading for codes. This may point you in a certain direction. Or just retrace your steps for any cables you disconnected to do the job.
Then try a hard reset by disconnecting the battery and holding the leads together for a minute, and make sure the battery is at full charge.

Also check the fuse for the key reader. F4 in boot.

If it has forgotten the key codes you need to find someone with a mongoose cable and software to put them back.

Well after a few days of checking, I found that the fuse F8 in the rear heel board was blown. This controls the interior lights and boot lights. I replaced the fuse and it blew again. Clearly I had a dead short somewhere. I removed both sun visors and found two faults There was a small cut in the wire leading to the illuminated mirror and one of the sun visor mounting screws had gone into the connector - both liable to cause a dead short. The car now starts and runs. Now all I have to do is re-assemble the sun visors without duplicating the short. Alec G.
