Battery for LWB straight six

Postby timedwards » Mon Mar 11, 2019 10:34 pm

I need a new battery and was wondering if anybody can tell me if this battery will be correct for my car please?

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/enduroline/096/

Also the car has stood for a while with a tank full of petrol. Should I be o.k. to just start her up or do I need to change the fuel filter first?

Thanks Tim

Measure the space where the battery fits and do out that way.
They give the battery dimensions in the ad.
Even after a year the fuel should still be ok, assuming no water has found its way in. I hope you kept the filler gator drain plug clear.

Tanya used to be competitive. But I've found other suppliers more keen on price for Bosch 5-year warranty (three off over the years) An 096 is a "standard" minimum AHC battery -- you want the next AHC size up if you're keen on keeping the car for a few years yet and don't want to be caught in a biting winter -- as Naki says measure the space and compare, I think you can get the next one up to an 096 in. They certainly fit into an XJ8

"Stood for a while"? How long's "a while"? Rotted out fuel in the bain of classic restoration engine starts. Just don't bother with it. You'll want to flush thru the fuel lines, change all filters, and if possible flush thru the tank as well to ensure your injectors don't get even more crud fed to them. Or if carbs silting up the float bowls. Been thru this on a Citroen DS23 (ex-South Africa which seemed to have most of the Kalahari in its fuel system. And my last XJ8 which had a sedate performance until it wouldn't start at all. Had the fuel pump out and changed. And the fuel filter bag. Both internal to the fuel tank, both had rust in them and other detritus

Good luck

Thanks both

I feel completely out of my depth now and so I think I will find a proper mechanic. It has taken so long to sort the suspension it would be a shame to crud up the engine now with three year old fuel! I think it will cost more to press on myself than get it sorted by someone who knows what they are doing. Lets hope it's not a VERY uneconomical proposition. I think a quote is in order!

Cheers Tim

[I'm also user richardt@richardsel.plus.com]

Three year old fuel is on its way out. Mebe worth saving as a cleaning agent but that's about it.

Sorry, can only visualise the tank and it's position on an XJ8 when I had my in-tank pump and fuel filter changed.
So unsure whether a simple undo-ing of a union would allow draining on an X300. But yes, have it done.
The flow of new fuel should be enough to dislodge the old fuel in the pump, filter, lines, (AJ16 lump) injectors.
You'll then be in a better position to judge whether the pump and filter need change out. My experience at 100k-odd with my last XJ8, you will.

Occasional misfire on one or two cylinders when warmed up is not indicitive of bad fuel -- that'd affect them all (apart from partial rail blockage) randomly. But indicates a bad injector, wiring, or perished injector seal

Let us know how you get on?
