Thinking of buying a X300

Postby DrSebWilkes » Sat May 20, 2017 7:23 pm

Hello everyone, I'm going to float this boat.

I'm legitimately thinking I'd like to have a Jag X300 because I legitimately think they are nice cars and they don't seem to be that expensive either? (And the earlier ones appeal more to me from a age perspective)

No way am I getting rid of my XJS and long may it be that way but I still want a first car (please don't tell me how it's un-insurable, I know I know but let me worry about that!)

So for a X300 that won't really require work (IE: with a MOT that won't require work for the next!), what sort of price are they? How reliable are they?

If I got another Jag it would probably mean for a while I have to can't afford to do anything to the XJS while I limp away with no money but once I pay off such debt I can afford to buy bits for the XJS and once in a while have the X300 run, right?

Being 16 I need guidance and whatnot so please forgive my naivete!

I think most of them will need "some work" unless you go for a upper end price, low mileage minter?
It depends how fussy you are about cosmetics though and having "everything working". If you are not that particular, then there are quite a few cheaper ones around still. Usually with paint and corrosion issues.
As always, it all depends how much you want to/ can spend. It most cases you get what you pay for really.
Then theres the old question of spec. Some people must have the top spec models. Others are more than happy with a standard spec 3.2.
These sorts of criteria will dictate how you narrow down you candidates.

I think reliability predominantly comes from proper maintenance. So as always check how well Its been looked after/ serviced.

This is how it all starts; alcoholism, smoking, drug dependency, watching EastEnders.
You think that you'll start with just the one and it will be fine but without realising it you have suddenly developed a really bad habit that will cost you a fortune.
Apart from watching EastEnders of course; that will just cost you your soul.
Be very careful what you wish for!
Anyway, get an XJR6, they are an absolute hoot.

I must confess the last time I checked the prices on these cars they seemed to be peanuts and I didn't give it any more thought to check. It seems to be they've gone up in price in the last year?

Hmm might not be so affordable as I once thought. And after some deliberation with family, they make a valid point to get stuff sorted on the XJS because prices of those parts will be going up too.

Sorry folks, but thanks anyway. If I had a spare grand or two I'd certainly get one!

The golden rule is to complete one project before you start another, Seb.

Restoration is rather pricey and running another car on the road at the same time as restoring the XJS could easily financially flatten you unless you have a sizeable money pot to draw from.

Keep at it.
