Thanks Rob
You are far more expert on the XJ40 than I. Where would you value it now can I ask?

Re: Daimler XJ40 LWB Cost new
values on 40's are difficult tbh, I know what the man wanted for the car, I know what I offered and I also know what it sold for, which is a lot less than the figure you have quoted
I know its not a direct comparison, but consider this, my ex Jaguar Heritage manual XJR , the last one built, perfect provenance and history, with concours wins, 10K miles from new is valued at just 18K
So a production Daimler, albeit low mileage, pristine when I saw it, but non running, nice history, in the auction market may be £8K
so there you have a can of worms ready to be opened and the comments to come rolling in

Re: Daimler XJ40 LWB Cost new
I remember the car too Rob. these things have a habit of coming back dont they.
i guess one of the typical "hurdles to a sale" is buyers and and sellers agreeing what the "true value" is. though i suspect the value maybe be up somewhat now compared to before? though that maybe depends if he ever got it running?
no doubt a car that has stood unused for many years or even decades will have a number if issues to see to before it can ever see the road again.
its a common misconception about many early 40s being LWB. i have heard many sellers claim a 40 is LWB before, i guess they feel it adds value? You know it almost never is, due to how rare they are, unless its clearly stated as being a Majestic. But also i have seen some SWB 40s with majestic badges, (added by a PO of course), so yet more confusion!
Once you know what to look for its easy to tell the difference though.
Anyhow, anytime a real Maj comes up, Rob has bought it before anyone even gets there. That how you know its a real one!

Re: Daimler XJ40 LWB Cost new
There are some hugely disparate asking prices for Jags on the market now.values on 40's are difficult tbh, I know what the man wanted for the car, I know what I offered and I also know what it sold for, which is a lot less than the figure you have quoted

End of the day, if you want the car, best thing to do is show the seller the whites of your eyes. Satisfy yourself you know exactly what you are buying (condition/ mechanicals and paperwork). Then start talking. You might need to play a long game if your figures remain far apart. I have had sellers come back to me many months later on cars i bid them on, and closed a deal eventually. I am sure Rob has too!
