The ride will be a little firmer yes. The lower the profile of the tyre, the less side wall flex there will be, especially on cornering. Though thats probably only noticeable on very hard cornering.
Is that the reason you are looking to change the tyre size to begin with?

Sport models (with Dimple wheels) used 225/55/16

its very much a personal choice.

one option is buy a separate set of wheels with the 55s on to see how it works for you, if you are not sure?

No I just think they look a bit better with lower profile and you cannot get the p6000 any more so I'm looking at other options, there are a couple of good p6000 on the car but the rest have developed bulges, so I think I will replace the lot.

You can get Pirelli P7s, which are better than P6000, if you fancy sticking with Pirellis, for example: http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/p ... e=28350523

Or there are good ones from Michelin and Continental in this size, which are not made for vans (225/60/R16 is apparently a popular van tyre size).

Over the last 13 years, my XJS has gone from P4000 225/60 to P6000 225/60 to P6000 225/55 and now to Hankook Ventus Prime 225/55.

The Hankooks are very good, standard fitment on many new cars. I'm very happy so far at this tyre and have now put Hankook on my x350 as well.
