Fixing a sunroof

Can I please have some help diagnosing what is wrong with my sunroof?

It will tilt upwards, but will not slide back at all: my understanding is that either the motors have given up, or the mechanism needs a clean. Is it more likely to be one than the other?

Also, what is the right tool to remove the TORX bolts holding the sunroof on? I tried a flat head screwdriver as google recommended and it didn't work: in addition all of my allen keys are either a bit too small or a bit too big, so I am at a loss.

Finally, is it a complex job? This will be the first thing I will have tried to fix on my car, and have little actual knowledge of what I am doing. Is the sunroof too big a job to start on?

Hi,

I have a similar problem with my X300 Daimler 6, see under "Module Repairs". It may be the control module, available only second-hand now about £30.00, but it seems that the sunroof has to be in the correct position to fit the replacement.

Hi again,

I have found the technical bulletin relating to "our" problem. If you Google "Jaguar Technical Bulletin X300" that will open up a whole raft of frightening topics about the X300. Scroll down to 13-39 and that will give you all the info. It is unlikely to be the motor as it tilts. Almost certainly the control module. They are not available from INALFA in the Netherlands, the original supplier who still make sunroofs, but I bought a second-hand unit from AUTO RESERVE in Derby, they have a website. There is a timing procedure for fitting the module. The roof and the module have to be in the right positions. Page 7 explains.

Hi once again,

If you have read how involved it is to remove the sunroof if I were you I would try another control module first. (See my previous reply on where to get the SRCM) Timing the thing seems critical and you`ll find that info. on the Technical Bulletin 13-34. I have yet to replace mine but you turn the synchronisation wheel until 2 white dots line up, shown in illus. 4, which took some time in my case.

Right, tried to install my new module, but didn't know what to do with the headlining to give me access to the old one, so I just messed around for a bit, and have created this video to aid diagnosis:

Hi,

This is going sound blindingly obvious but are you using the rocker switch correctly? It`s too easy to overlook the basics when fault finding!!!

You access the module via the roof console. If you drop the sunglasses holder you will see a plastic screw. Turn anti-clockwise a quarter turn and the roof console unit will drop. You will see the motor and to the right of the motor the module. This should be held in place by a ratchet strap. It looks a bit of fiddle to get to. Did you download the info. from the technical bulletins? Remember the roof has to be in the correct position as per the technical bulletins when you fit the replacement.

I'm fairly sure I am, yes.

I dont think I can reach the module without dropping the headlining, is this as easy as unscrewing the sun visor? I tried to follow the technical bulletins, but will try again tonight with my uncle (who knows a bit about these things!)

there is no need to move the headliner to access the sunroof module, has above, drop the sunglasses holder down, remove the quarter turn crew which will allow the roof console to be withdrawn, you will see the module on the right hand side of the aperture, unclip, unplug and swap over, ensure the roof is in the closed position, Should take no more than 10 minutes from start to finish

TORX bits are used to turn Torx screws etc. Ask in Halfords or the like to show you

I'm sorry to be so annoying, but I don't see any clips at all to unclip from the module: the white wire cartridges come out easy enough, but then the module will not move, and has no clips that I can see or feel: the left hand side pokes out, but it is right up against the roof, and the right hand side is inaccessible to me as the headlining is in the way.

I am probably being a mug, as this is my first attempt at DIY in a car, but I'm going to try again over the weekend.

Also, thanks oldtimer, I borrowed some TORX bits from my uncle, so at least that bit is sorted

The module should be held in place by a plastic ratchet strap, cut the strap to release the module.

Right! I bucked my ideas up, replaced the module as instructed, and the sunroof still doesn't work! Unless anyone has any other ideas, I'll probably leave it until I next see my specialist and get him to diagnose it.
