XJ40 mental fuel guage

Postby jimthack180 » Fri Jun 18, 2010 7:53 pm

I have just purchased a 1993 XJ40 Sovereign, and of course, when I picked it up, the tank was empty. I filled the tank to the brim, and drove 35 miles home, at which time the guage had dropped to halfway. Next morning, on starting, the guage registered almost full, about right I thought, and stayed that way on a trip of 6 miles or so to Tesco. However, on restarting, it registered completely empty, with the orange warning light on. Worse still, on leaving the car park the car died, just as if it had run out of petrol! After the initial panic and disbelief, which lasted just a minuite or so, I turned the key again and she started, and off we went, with the guage showing almost full again. This morning, on starting the guage registered half full only, and on arriving at my destination, only approx 15 miles, it registered completely empty again. When I got in to come home, everything was back to normal, but after only 3 or 4 miles, it was down to less than half. Any Ideas please ?????????
