lpg fitting

Postby gabriel » Fri Apr 16, 2010 10:35 pm

Hello chuggernought.
Ive just bought a 93 model xj40 with a 3.2l engine and an induction lpg system fitted to it. As ive just got the car i havent had the system serviced or checked over yet so i cant tell you how well it works.
However if you want any info on how the system is layed out and what components are positioned here and there ill try to help you with that.
Hope this is of some help to you.
p.s I dont suppose you know where i can get a set of ht leads for a reasonable price do you? my local supplier wants £50.00!

in fear of opening up a real can of worms and putting myself well and truly in the firing line!!

I am not a fan of LPG on 40 and 300, to be truthful, I have never seen a good installation yet, and some I've seen are down right bodges and dangerous

I have sold countless air boxes to replace ones that have caught fire or just exploded with the blow backs suffered

not for me I'm afarid, now I'll take the flak on the chin!

if its set up properly you shouldn't get any blow back, everyone says the same of rover v8's but having fitted and set up numerous kits for land rover club members and 4 of my own v8's(yes i have that many!) i haven,t experianced a single destructive blow back. it mainly depends on the mixer, alot of kits just have a generic "one type fits all" ring mixer, i have been known to engineer my own, and probably will do the same on my daimler but just wondering what others have fitted?

I've got a BRC kit fitted to my X300 XJR. It wasn't fitted by me though... but by Neal Mugglestone who has featured in the JEC magazine. Personally I find it a very good system, three years of use and no faults... If you could get one of these BRC multi-point injection systems, I'd recommend it.
I can see why some won't like this idea, paticularly if they haven't seen how good a proper conversion can be, as there are som really horrid ones that I've seen too.
I paid for a very good kit and a professional installer as my car is superchaged, so any potential for backfiring or problems could be magnified with disasterous results.
So far, in 30K miles, I've more than paid off the cost of conversion which is very handy.
cheers, Pete

Hi there if anyone out there wants to see how a car should be converted to LPG just contact myself at SME Autogas in Edinburgh.
I can show lots of pictures of my work on x300/x308/xjs/and XF.......

I have a 1997 x300 3.2 sport on lpg using a fully sequential system and have run it trouble free for over 5 years.
I average 20mpg on petrol and with LPG being half the price of petrol gives me an equivalent 40mpg.......

I will agree with Rob as i have also seen a lot of bad conversions and would always advice a mulitpoint system over a single point system, as it is much better for power/performance/consumption/drivability and mulitpoint has no down sides. People only remember the bad conversions but trust me LPG is a fantastic fuel and makes owning a bit Jag much more fun......

Lpg must be fitted buy someone who knows what they are doing and be UKLPG registered and all conversions put on the UKLPG register http://www.drivelpg.co.uk

I have seen Alan's car, and it is by far the best and certainly the neatest installation I have seen

I have just had delivered a V12 40 with gas, non runner, gas tank ripped out, but what is left of the conversion is a real dogs dinner, i will get some pics up sometime, the car only arrived an hour ago!!

here's few pics of a V12 40 just delivered, this is why I hate gas conversions

firstly the battery tray has been cut away on this car, along with the JDS diagnostic port, the battery cover was also butchered

love the filler port

Image

more boot butchery going on here

Image

odd bits of pipe used to get at the warm water supply
