Hello from new board member

Postby db40 » Thu Nov 12, 2009 8:05 pm

Hi,

I have just rejoined the JEC so thought I should say hello to everyone here. I'm sure I recognise a few othe cars in the gallery!!
I have a 1992 Jaguar XJ40 which I have added to the gallery here:

Hopefully it works... I love my old Forty and cannot imagine ever being without it. Whatever happens, I can always rely on it to bring a smile to my face.

Ha ha! It is a small world with these old XJ40s!
I doub't my beast's engine bay is cleaner - it is like new, but then so is your No1s!! The pale blue sets the engine off in the same way as the dark blue sets off all the chrome and the lovely curved tops to the front and rear wings.

It is strange how mine caught rust. The quality of the rust protection on these seems very variable to me. Stranger still is the fact it was (visible)rust free until about 2003-4, then suddenly went in the place you have seen. I have hardly used the thing for a couple of years now while I have procrastinated about it  Incredibly, it hasn't been out in the rain since Feb 2008! Even that was an accident!! And highly traumatic!

Still, I hope to get it sorted now.

Hi,

All this has changed since I was last a member - there used to be a board for each model of XJ then. I guess the boards were very quiet so they decided to consolidate them? I can see their reasoning if this was the case, since 1 busier board is better than several moribund ones. My only worry from this is that by subsuming my XJ40 into a larger "XJ" group, it will get less visibility in the JEC, when it needs more.

Which model series of XJ do you have?

Hi
I have just joined today and this is a mornings work with two magazines as well. Its my birthday weekend so a nice present.

I have just bought a 95 x300 sport 3.2 and wondered if anyone could tell me why "sport" - is there a non sport version and how does it differ?

It s currently doing 18 around town and up to 22 mpg on a run - but I dont mind as its got a prins lpg system that works wonderfully. The condition is superb with alleged 67000 on the clock but no service history (shame). Today the snow covers it but I am waiting to take photos as its a turquoise ( which isnt to everyones taste but i like it.)

...and my name is David so Hello David!

:)

Hello! I've the standard??? X300, I think that the sport if auto, hold the gear ratios open for a little longer??? other wise some were manual gearbox'd.
Apart from that, the only things I know of that are different is the wood interior is stained a dark colour and not, as the standard car's, natural colour?

Others might know of more 'technical' differences

First jag eh ? , what is it ? , might want to put that on your profile , i'm currently running two , which isn't as expensive as you might think considering the paltry amount i pay for classic insurance .

Rust free cars really do exist , in fact that's why i HAD to buy another as the first one i bought was so perfect i couldn't bring myself to use it all year round .

Rustless Rovers on the other hand are a myth , but this one of mine is about as good as they get , this is wholly down to liberal applications of Dinitrol .

I bought her about 22 years ago and can't bring myself to part with her , back then the v8 insurance was far too expensive so i plumped for the 2.6 , i don't wish it was a v8 as both my Daimlers would pi$$ all over a v8 at anything except load carrying , which is a particular forte of the SD1

Essentially the difference in the Sport spec cars is trim and suspension, dampers are a bit stiffer, seats are firmer and a different design, wood tends to be nearly black, dash top, door rolls and armrest are usually black as well, spec is usually quite low, extras had to be ordered, leecy seats, sunroof, heated seats, heated screen, cruise, whereas on a Sov these were standard, but at least you go alloys as standard on a base XJ 6 you got steelies and dustbin lids!!

Most were autos, the 3.2 engined cars did not have the electronic gerabox, but the 4.0 cars did, this will hold into the gears a bit longer and give a sharper kickbown and change in "sport" mode, XJR models also had the switchable box but a different unit

Manual cars are rare, I reckon less than 5% of 300's were specified as such, mainly 3.2 base XJ6's from what I can see, although ther are a few 4.0 manuals, and I have even see one LWB Daimler 4.0 manual, should have bought that one, I can tell you as a fact there were 103 manual RHD XJR X300's built, out of circa 6K cars, 27 are known to survive, I have two of them here, a very early one, ex jaguar press, and a very late one last but one known to survive, but four from the end of production
