Hello all,
I have been trying to source a thermostat for my MK 2, the correct type closes off the by pass circuit when it opens, which the thermostats commonly sold for Mk2s do not.
There are thermostats of this type for the 3.8 E Type, and the sellers description states also fits MK1 3.4 saloon.
Does anyone know of a supplier who stock the correct one or would the E Type one fit, even if some modificatio is required?

Hi Alec,
my manual says there is a slot in the thermostat housing outlet pipe, which provides the bypass. It seems to imply that it is not a special thermostat and it does give part numbers for thermostats. I can attach a scan, if you want.

it is not special but it is different, Jaguar used this design on many cars of this era.
The thermostat that is sold by the suppliers I looked at will work but reduce the cooling capacity as the by pass is never shut off hence some of the circulating coolant doesn't go through the radiator.
The correct item, which is available for the E Type, has a skirt attached to the armature of the thermostat, and as it opens, this skirt shields the by pass slot and sends (virtually) all of the coolant through the radiator. In practice I doubt if it makes any real difference but if the cooling system is stressed for whatever reason, the correct thermostat may prevent overheating?
I spoke to SNG Barratt who did not know if their item for the E Type would fit a MK2 but I took a chance and based on that car manufacturers do not make significant changes for no reason, I anticipate that at most it will need a minor modification for it to fit and work?
Incidentally I e-mailed the JEC MK2 technical advisors but have yet to receive a response.

hello Peter,
I bought a thermostat for the E Type and from measuring the skirt both open and shut determined thyat it should work. It clears the slot when closed and covers it when open.
I have quite afew more months work before I can actually put the car back on the road to see how it goes.
