Upgrade rear lights

Hi, has anybody fitted LED bulbs to the Stop / tail and indicators on a mk2 ? I understand you need to fit an electronic flasher unit to get them to work properly , is this true ?

Hello Jim,

yes, that's true, as the original system works on the amount of current that is drawn by the lamp, by significantly reducing it the original relay will not flash.
If you are concerned by the lack of light out put, wash the lenses and clean the reflectors.

I watched a short U tube video last night on the LED stop and tail lights, and it was very disparaging of them.

It showed a standard incandescant bulb 21w/5w gave 5 times as much light on stop as on tail, where as the LED gave very little more so was not noticable when braking.

Hi, Thank you for your replies , I have fitted new lenses ,reflectors and standard bulbs and the lights have improved dramatically, upgrade forgotten, there are plenty of other things on the jag to spend my money on. !!

Hello Jim,

glad you got it sorted.

The same applies to the gauge lighting, people complain that they can be dim but it's surprising how dirty the inside of the glass gets. Many classics had dimmers on the gauge lighting because they can be too bright when new and clean.

Hi Alec, I fitted blue led bulbs to the instruments some time ago, they are much brighter now and have a blue tint , they look very posh. !!! :
