Electronic Ignition
Moderators:Aceman, ecosselynx
Hi Everyone!
I have a 1967 Daimler 420 Sovereign. I would like to fit the type of electronic ignition that is concealed within the distributor cap. Has anyone any recommendation for a particular type or hints as to what to look out for in fitting such a set-up?
Many thanks in anticipation!

Re: Electronic Ignition
Hi, I fitted the 'Petronix Ignitor' system to my MK2 - good value from SNGB. This seems to work well and is 'invisible' - also fitted a gold Lucas sport coil to be on the safe side......
Re: Electronic Ignition
Many thanks for that, Buzetti. My distributor is a 22D6 which I'm fairly certain is the same as the Mk 2. I've already got the Lucas gold coil so I'm half way there already!

Re: Electronic Ignition
Ace, if you give SNGB a call and tell them which distributor you have (and whether pos or neg earth) they will send you the correct kit - parts for the 22D6 are:
XK22D/P - pos earth
XK22D - neg earth
Good luck with it - takes minutes to fit.

Re: Electronic Ignition
I can recommend the Ignitor as being very easy to fit and very reliable. I have one in my Mk2 (22D6 distributor) and another in my VW Beetle based Speedster replica. No problems with either in 4-5 years use.

Try looking at the availability of electronic ignition packages on Ebay and the like. You can get a basic kit for less than half the price you would pay for something from the Jaguar specialists.
All you need is the sensor and magnet pack to replace the points and condenser, anything beyond this is just fluff.
Try http://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk for starters. I paid around £30 for mine. They even do a complete new distributor with it all fitted for around £85.

Re: Electronic Ignition
Hello Stuart,
it worries me a little that a new distributor is available for about half the price of having one overhauled. Also because I am very familiar with the Triumph six cylinder distributors, I looked up what they offer for that engine. The range of cars that one distributor fits is at odds with the distributor specifications for the various models. There is a big difference in advance curves between the injection engines and the carburettor engines yet they sell the same distributor for both models.
I would suggest that anyone interested in buying one of these be aware of the original specification and enquire what the specification of the one on offer is and see how they compare?

Re: Electronic Ignition
Hello Stuart,
further to my above post, I was looking through my workshop manual (for the damper bolt torque figure you asked about) and noticed the distributor specifications and was struck how different the 3.8 8:1 engine differed to the 9:1 engine. The 9:1 has far less total mechanical advance (6 degees less, i.e 12 degrees engine advance) and total advance is reched at quite a modest engine speed. I know there were few 9:1 engines but it does show that what looks the same is quite different internally.
