I am considering the fitting of a SS exhaust to my Mk2. I would like to hear others opinions of the Bell verses Falcon (Falcon standard and straight through) which are available from the two well known parts suppliers that advertise in the club magazine. Thanks Chris
I have recently been conemplating the same, however, "Hayward & Scott" was reccommended to be best of all. They are somewhat more expensive however, the quality is better (I'm told). I visited their site and was taken around the workshop - products look very good. These guys also supply a well known restoration company in Maldon and are also listed in the JEC magazine.
I finally bit the bullet and ordered my system 3 weeks ago, can't wait to fit it!

STAINLESS EXHAUST
Since my post on this subject I have followed Pete Bells advice and fitted the Bell system (no relation). I found it easy to fit and initially I was disappointed by the sound but now I am used to it. It does not detract from performance as far as one can tell by driving. It's probably better for being quieter because loud exhausts are waring when driving over longer distances.
I did fit the "Hayward & Scott" system, including thier SS 6 branch manifold. Very pleased with the product, the quality/fit is excellent. I did have to modify the silencer bracket slightly. I too was disapointed by the noise, completely different sound (louder), as much to do with the manifold as the 50 mm exhaust system itself, however I am getting used to it!

Re: Stainless Steel exhausts
Just had my (300hp) mk2 on a Dyno, and the exhaust is getting red hot.
I have been advised to change it to a s/s sports exhaust, with manifold.
Thoughts?

Hello NJ,
changing the material won't affect the temperature of the manifold.
One thing to check is that the ignition timing is not retarded and\or weak mixture as that also will run hotter, as this can increase the manifold temperature?

Thanks Alec.
I was under the impression that the exhaust on a standard 3.8 was quite restricted, causing them to run hot.
The idea behind fitting a sports exhaust and manifold was to reduce back pressure in the system?
But I will get the garage to double check the mixture and timing.

Re: Stainless Steel exhausts
One way to keep the under bonnet temperature down is to have the manifolds sprayed by Zircotec. They come highly recommended by Practical Classics in the past.
Perhaps worth a look.
