Hi, Has anybody fitted the uprated cooling fan from Barratts( c12391/1 ) to a mk2, if so did it do a good job ? at £160 i am hesitant to buy one just to try !

Re: mk 2 uprated cooling fan
Hello Jim,
as a fan is not required for most driving conditions I wouldn't buy an 'uprated' fan. Are you having a problem with cooling your car, if so the fan is not the answer.

Re: mk 2 uprated cooling fan
Hi Alec, I have no fan on my 3.4 only a 14 inch electric fan fixed to the front of the rad, the problem i think i have got is the engine is running hot at 90.c. The Rad, hoses, switch and thermostat are all new. I could refit the original fan to see what difference that would make before i do anything else. Jim

Re: mk 2 uprated cooling fan
Hello Jim,
during normal driving your fan should not run, which is why I said that the fan is not the answer. Compared to the forward motion of the car the fan only passes a small amount of air.
Is the temperature gauge correct, do you think and have you the correct replacement thermostat in your car? Other issues could be the general tuning of the engine or probably rather obvious, binding brakes?

Re: mk 2 uprated cooling fan
Hi Alec, Thank you for your input it has been very helpful . I do not know if the Temp guage is giving a correct reading, i intend to purchase a new one at Stoneleigh , I do have the correct thermostat but intend to do the Wat Jag conversion . general tuning is good , it goes like the clappers !!!
. Binding brakes could be a possibility. Thanks again , Jim

Re: mk 2 uprated cooling fan
Hi Jim
I run my original mechanical fan along with an electric fan controlled by an adjustable thermostatic switch. The mechanical fan in normal traffic conditions works fine and only in traffic jams on a warm day do I ever hear the electric fan trip in.
As you say check out the temperature gauge as these were not high quality items also check or replace you temperature sensor as these deteriorate in time.

I have just discovered i have the wrong Rad cap , the one I have is a long neck ( 4lb ) and it should be a short neck ( 4 lb ) . what would the consequences of that be ??
Another thing on my list for Stoneleigh !
