S-type vacuum operated heater valve.

Just a note for anyone looking for a replacement for this item.

I have obtained & installed a valve from the States, originally for a Ford & opens when vacuum is applied. The water pipework is of the correct size but the vacuum pipe had to be swaged out using eletricians tape until a good seal was obtained. Obviously it wouldn't do on a car entered for concours events, but for everyday use, it does do the job. I'm certainly pleased with it as previously as tap type valve was fitted & had to be operated from under the bonnet.

It was bought via ebay from MR FOMOCO MOTORCRAFT store and is described as 'FORD VACUUM ACTUATED HEATER VALVE 18495 VACUUM OPENS 5/8" HOSE' Cost was around £16 including postage. The item took about two weeks to arrive.

Is this item for the classic S-type rather than for the modern 1999-2007model?

I just query this as I have a question mark as to modern S-type application.

Rather confusing perhaps, but the classic S-type is served by the Mk2 Bulletin Board.

Hi Mike

Surely they have more in common with the Mk2 & 420 models than the new S-type!

Sorry. My mistake misreading the BB heading. Easily confused nowadays!

I`ll use me good eye next time.

Looks very useful as mine is dead (I think that's a common fault!)

Have you got a picture of it in-situ? Does it simply bolt up?

It does look rather shiny but I suppose a quick blow over with matt black paint will make it look a little less obvious under the bonnet.

Although turning off the heaters this time of the year isn't my first priority!

Not sure if this is of any help to anyone, a couple of years ago a guy drove his new to him classic S type to the local club. It was too high at the rear and too low at the front and hissing nicely, I warned him that if he didn't get the vacuum leak fixed soon he could damage his engine as the vacuum take off is on the inlet manifold at the rear cylinder and a leak can make that cylinder run weak, overheat and seize.

A few weeks later he was recovered from the motorway with a seized engine. It cost a lot for his engine to be rebuilt.
