Daimler V8 250 front shock absorber

Hello, I have removed the shock absorbers on my V8 250. I believe they are original_I have two questions.
1) How can I tell if they need replacing.

2) The bottom of the SA locates into a bracket which in turn is fixed to the bottom of the spring base. This bracket has shoulders with a hole to locate the SA secured with a bolt. The shoulders on the bracket are different ..one side is vertical and the other is at an angle. Clearly there is a right way to locate. Can anyone help please.

Usually a SA is knackered if there is external damage, like the piston rod bent, or the threaded ends corroded away or bent. But the main reason is if it is leaking oil from the seal. On MOT they look for oil leaks and do a bounce test, it should rebound once or twice at most. I have Koni dampers that can be rebuilt by the makers if no physical damage.

As for fitting the front SA into the lower spring pan, the further out the end of the SA is the better i.e. nearer the wheel. So the bolt needs to be nearer the wheel which I think is the vertical side.
