Hi, I have been thinking of doing the same. Seems we have a choice of mechanical or electric systems. The first like M&C Wilkinsons.
Not sure which to choose and which is easiest to fit. Will be interested in any answers as I would like to do the work myself.
Best of luck,
Regards,
Paul
PS I live in the Nantwich area so if there is someone in the Midlands then not too far away for me.

Hi,

The old way was to change the front subframe to the later 420 subframe that came with the later marples steering box and 3 pot Girling calipers to improve braking, but these are very rare now so kits are produced to use a steering rack which IF correctly engineered will give something like the correct geometry (their are enough posts on hear about 420 axles and steering boxes).

I assume the brackets are made to fit the MkII front subframe, so fitting a rack should (hate that word) just be a bolt up option. You need to look how it is connected to the steering column.

If it is electric then you will need a big alternator, so a conversion is needed there, but also the delivery cables to the battery will need replacing (this is feed through a bracket to the ammeter and this will need replacing or disconnecting I should think.

Purely hydraulic operation requires a pump to be driven from the crankshaft so a second pully is attached to the existing one or replace the existing one with a double pulley and the pump mounted up.

Space is tight to say the least in the MkII engine bay, but with care it can all be done with the engine in situ.

I have the old 420 subframe power steering and calipers, plus an alternator conversion of my own making. If you like originallity then you won't like my car, but the steering is light and nolonger hurts me, plus after blowing three 45 amp alternators we are now on a 65 amp unit. I would expect you would need a bigger alternator still to run an electric rack or electric driven pump. As I have an excellent system now I've not looked at the modern replacements other than to wince at the prices asked.

I hope that this is of some help to lay the ground work.

Best of luck and a happy christmas to everyone.
