hi i have a 65 s-type and the steering has alot of play in it what should i do or replace

First thing you need to do is find out/identify the parts where the play is, then come back and people maybe able to help you.

before i can do that the steering box had a leak, so have stripped it down and replaced all the seals and o rings, after putting it back together have now found it will not move ,stripped again and looked cannot find anything out of place can ayone help or the name of a company who will have a look, Andy

Look in the front of the magazine to find 'Ken Jenkins' hours of business and phone number, he can usually point you in the right direction for a repairer.

went to ECS engineering very good and help full with steering box put it all back together now the steering pump which has been rebuilt by a company is making a lot of noise when turning and idling it seems to be straining, works well just very noisey can any body help, was hoping to go to Prescott in it as its 20 mins away but not to be

I'm assuming the steering pump is the type that bolts onto the back of the Dynamo, is it the pump or the dynamo making the noise, using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope will help to identify which.

I use an old XJ6 pump and it makes some noise but not intrusive. Are you using the correct oil, is it frothing?

At worst send the pump back to the 'overhauler' or your new steering workshop.

yes it does bolt to the back of dynamo, and its the pump making the noise, unbolted it and ran dynamo no noise,correct oil no frothing

I would certainly look at sending this back to the supplier. The seal kits are readily available for this and they are straight forward to reseal- but if you have paid to have the job done and it is failing - I think they bets have another look. A decent firm would WANT to have it back and correct any error - for the sake of reputation.

With regards to the fee play, the drag link and track arm pins are common for wearing and will give you a very sloppy steering set up.
Once you are connected up and working again - have the car on a 4 post ramp if you can - or peer underneath (you need the weight of the car on the wheels) and have someone rock the steering wheel and look for the worn linkage.
Companies (such as ours ) can supply the linkages and drag ends.

all put back together again turned the steering wheel backwards ad forwards 40 times all ok no noise and power steering that works it must have been air.
