Power steering pump output?

My MK2 3.4 Auto, LHD was fitted with an updated steering rack many years ago! The change was made because the power steering box was leaking and repairs did not seem possible.
I will be honest and say the modification was not well done, the turning circle is very limited and the car squeals at full lock.
I think that the steering rack comes from an early XJ, I am not sure what model it is, but has markings 209L and B015141 - any idea what it is, as I need to replace the bushes?

My main question ----- I have the old dynamo with the power steering pump on the back, and wonder if the pump would produce enough pressure to drive this more modern rack?
There was no problem with the pump when it came off, and if it would work I could use a "dynamator" and get rid of the the two belts and free up some space?

In the long run, I would like to get the original steering box leaks fixed, but that could take a while!

Regards
David

Hi,
No-one seems to have answered your question, probably few have gone the same route you are proposing and your post is not completely clear. From the third reading I assume you have an aftermarket steering kit fitted of a rack and a modern steering pump, but wish to replace the good pump with an old earlier pump and a dynamo??!!.

You spoke of repairing the original power steering motor, is it aluminium or cast iron as there were two motor, the later Marples CI pump can be repaired (I've done it).

I would have thought you could fit any pump to any rack other than the post 2002 pump as the have systems to load them rather than unload them at low speed.

If your rack is making the tyres squeal isn't that the problem.

I personally would never consider going back to a dynamo.

That should open the flood gates of reply.

Hi David,
I have a 62 mk2 with with a steering box and dynamo driven pump which I've had converted to a "Dynamator" which has worked very well
also the steering box leaked and left a puddle on the floor, I found a power steering specialist in Greenwich that fixed the box for about £150
3 years ago it has not dripped since.

Dave.

Brian and Dave
Thanks for your comments, and sorry was not 100% clear.

I currently have an XJ rack and pump and an alternator. The installation is a bit of a mess, and I was thinking of changing to the Dynamator that that Dave has - an alternator inside the old C42 dynamo body. The question is - if I installed a Dymamator with my original power steering pump on the back - would it produce enough to drive the more modern XJ rack?

My original leaky power steering box is the early Burman type with recirculating balls - hard to refurbish, but one day I will have a go?
