I need to explain from the start I am a paraplegic wheelchair user so things like getting under a car is a non starter. Anyway I bought a S type in the back end of the year and one of the first things I found was that the car had been converted from a Dynamo/ power steering set up to an alternator with a seperate power steering pump that is driven via a double v pully from the crankshaft. The question is has any member any idea as to what the set up might be from as there is a slight leak on the pump.

Re: 1964 3.4 S type power steering mods
Hi John,
This sounds very similar to my system, Dynamo replaced by and alternator and a second pulley machined to fit in front of the first one to drive an XJ6 (probably series 3) pump. Which in turn powers a 420 (cast iron) marples sterring box.
Can I suggest you photograph the pump from different angles so we may be able identify your pump for you.
Brian
EDIT You can go onto sites such as SNG Barratt, Rimmer Bros and British parts as thier online catalogues often have pictures of the pumps, Ebay is a very good source of information as these are used parts and the pictures are sometimes more helpful. Don't discount Ken Jenkins as he can often tell you what car an item is from just by the thread or spanner size used. I have found in the past that a lot of the suppliers will only help IF you can tell them which car it is from.

Re: 1964 3.4 S type power steering mods
Hi Martec,
Since reading the above thread earlier I have been racking my brain (what's left) trying to remember the name of the PAS pump used extensively throughout the Jaguar, Rover, L/Rover,
Triumph vehicles from about 1968 - 1980 and of course it is the American Saginaw (spelling ?) Pump. This pump is used on the XJ series 1,2, and 3 along with early XJ-s don't know about later models and is remotely mounted.
Looking in my 1966 S type manual that pump was mounted to the rear of the dynamo but I don't know anything about that arrangement.
The Saginaw pump is/was a most reliable pump. It is an eccentric vane type. I have repaired leaks on a small number and is quite straight forward. I last did one on my XJ12 probably 10 years ago. The workings of the pump are mounted on to a back plate and the cover is also the reservoir with the cap and integral dip stick on the top. I would imagine that the service kit is still available. From what I can remember the cover/reservoir vary in size depending on the application.
Your set up sounds a very professional method, however I hope the above helps just a little

Re: 1964 3.4 S type power steering mods
Does this pump apply to the Mk2 as I thought it was either a Burman or Adwest system which used Hobourn- Eaton pumps for them?

Re: 1964 3.4 S type power steering mods
the conversion pump is not from the 420, as the oil reservoir is from the original set up. untill I can get somebody to takes some picks for me I am stumped as to the history of this set up. I have not seen the original set up so I am not sure how the dynamo and pump are attached together. Is it possible to have a pully fitted to the original pump? .
