Can anybody please help. I have a 1964 3.4 which needs the upper column bush renewing. Can anybody tell me how the inner column is removed from the outer? In my old parts book it shows that particular column C25575 as having "thrust bearing retaining innner column in outer tube" Your help would be much appreciated.

I had the same job to do on my 420 when my upper bearing crumbled. Its quite an easy job and probably worth replacing the lower bearing whilst you're at it.
You need to discoonect the inner column from the lower column at the universal joint. You will find this under the carburettors and need to be fairly dexterous to reach it. A 1/2" spanner and socket (preferably a 3/8" square drive) is all you need for this, if I remember correctly. You should be able to withdraw the inner column once this is done.
If you send me a private message with your email address, I will email you the relevant parts of the workshop manual.
Does your horn work correctly? If not then this would be a good opportunity to replace the wire, which often fractures with age, that runs down the middle of the column.

I did this job last week, and you may well have done it by now. There is a ring clip at the lower end of the outer column below the horn mechanism. You need to pop the retainer off the clip and rotate the clip so that it slips off the part underneath, which I think is what you refer to as the thrust washer. This is a fork-shaped piece that slides out of the column, allowing the inner column to be withdrawn from the outer. This is not shown in any of the manuals that I have seen, and had me scratching my head for a while.
The column bearings are a tight fit in the tube as they have to be deformed to allow the locating lugs to pass along the tube and into their locating holes. Grease them well, or your column will groan and the steering will be heavy. How do I know.....?!
The thrust washer and locating ring reassemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
