Hi all, i want to upgrade my 1963 Mk2 3.8 and this includes fitting PAS.
I am presently looking for a series 3 XJ6 breaker to provide 5 speed box,PAS and front brake upgrade. Is the 420 the only provider of PAS with suitable front cross member ? If the XJ6 steering, cross member and brakes are not compatible i shall reconsider buying a donor XJ and if necessary purchase required parts separately.
Your advice shall be greatly appreciated.
( still seeking history of my Mk2 regd. 600 FGJ)
Regards Eugene.
? Early XJ PAS in Mk2 3.8

Hello again Eugene
The XJ steering parts will not fit your Mk2. Go for a 420 front subframe with an Adwest (Marles Varamatic) steering box, which will keep the steering geometry correct. The difficulty with the Varamatic box is its tendency to leak, and I understand that it is an awkward job to replace the seals. You will also need the PAS fluid reservoir.
If you have a 3.4/3.8L engine you can fit the original Jaguar PAS pump which is integral with the dynamo (you will need to swap your existing dynamo for the integrated dynamo/pump). If you have a 2.4L car you will need to fettle a pump for the PAS - either the early XJ6 unit with the integral reservoir, or an aftermarket unit from someone like Vicarage will do the job - and provide a double pulley at the crank damper to drive it.
I used this set up on my 2.4L Mk2 with a Vicarage pump, and it works very well.
Best wishes, David
