Changing Steering Wheels

Postby bigsi54 » Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:01 pm

I am in the process of swapping my steering wheel I have tried to remove the current wheel but the main nut holding the wheel seems to be an unusual size. Using a metric socket set for sizing it seems to be larger than a 24mm and smaller than a 27mm, but neither set I have used has the inbetween sizes. Does anyone know the size so I know what to purchase?

Thanks

Simon

Simon,

How did you get on ?

Not sure on the size of the nut, checked in the Haynes manual but no joy !

Thinking of changing my wheel soon so would be very interested to hear how progress with yours !

Hi,

The pressed locking nut is 15/16 af and the main nut is 1 in. af.

Changed my wheel today for a 15" leather Moto Lita.

I had to take on board that more effort is needed at parking speeds but i'm really pleased with this addition as it's transformed the "feel" of the car. Looks in keeping too !

Took the opportunity to clean and lightly grease the splines / split cone.

Horn push needed slight modification (trimming down contact tab and spring). All working fine now !

Thanks for all of the guidance folks. I shall go and have a second attempt!

I am hoping to get a bit of spanner time at the weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.

The wheel I am fitting is a wooden rimmed Moto-Lita. I got it secondhand but it is in great condition.

Hi

Hope it goes well, I've one of those (see 209 GYE) I also had it on a 340 before, without PAS and it was fine, although I did drive it fairly reguarly.
I found the 15" wheel suited by build better "short a***".

good luck

Hi,

Steering wheel is all changed, main nut was 1" so thanks for the help. Horn push needed some mods but it is fitted and works! Excellent.

Many Thanks

Simon
