Any idea what to check next?
My 1961 mk2 3.8 has started to smell excessively of petrol inside the cabin and outside the rear offside in particular.
No obvious signs of fuel leak underneath but I am sure there is a problem.
Car runs perfectly and has been upgraded with twin 2 inch carbs and a straight through exhaust.
Any help on what to check next?

Re: Excessive fume smell
I had a fume smell inside and outside (although it was front offside) from my S type - again with no obvious leak.
My problem was the Auto Enrichment Device was leaking as the air tubes were filling with petrol; for some reason adjusting the sprung metering needle which had unwound itself cured the problem.
Doesn't take much of a weep/leak for it to smell.
In your case my guess is one of the unions on the fuel line is weeping. Looking at my SNG Barrat catalogue it looks like there are a couple of candidates. Especially one that I think will be found clipped to the RHS chassis leg and probably under the rear passenger seat area.
It'll be worth a look underneath to see if the joint is wet.

Re: Excessive fume smell
I've had problems with the banjo bolts onto the fuel filter, slight wear and roughness on the washer face of the filter, a light polish on a fine oil stone cured it until the washers leaked.
On another occasion there was a slight drip from one the carbs, if you can get your hand to the area without getting burnt you can feel if its wet.

Re: Excessive fume smell
A tiny weep can give off a lot of a petrol smell.
My S-type smelled quite badly in the same places as yours & all I could find was a tiny bit of dampness from the left tank drain plug. Initially I discounted this as there was quite a bad smell in the cabin, but having had to drain the tank, (as I had filled up with diesel! No I don't know why I did it either), & replace the drain plug washer with a new one, the small has disappeared & not re-appeared since...
I can only assume that airflow caused the smell to come into the cabin... it centainly doesn't smell any more.
good luck with the hunt!
