I have recently had some chrome strips for the MkII rechromed. I was surprised to find if in good condition they can rechrome them.

Apparently the originals, apart from fitting first time are copper whereas the new stuff you buy may need to be cut down to size and is on a steel backing so can corrode from the exposed cut end or back.

I have no experience of the new chrome, just what I have been told by the chroming people when they are asked to rechrome it!!!

I'm very happy with the rechroming from 'Prestige Plating' of Mexborough.

I fitted new chrome to my Mk2 largely without problems (though the chrome inserts in front and rear screens were truly evil to fit) and no trimming of the pieces was required - they were exact replicas of the originals obtained, as I recall, from Manners. The only thing I had to do with regard to fit was to twist the side chrome strips for the rear wings so that they would conform more to the curve of the bodywork there and not spring out. It's also easier to fit these pieces at the rear first and work forward to the trailing edge of the rear doors. This might not be such an issue with the S-type with its less pronounced curve on the hindquarters.

Hi Neil,

Can I ask how you secured the rear screen chrome trim please?

10 years ago I tried to fit them and ended up scratching my new paint, so never fitted them. I have now had them rechromed and been advised to stick them on with 'tiger seal'. As you say an evil job, how did you go about it and what advise would you give for fitting the rear screen chromes?

Hi, Brian, sorry I didn't get back to you. That's great news about the rear screen chrome. The only advice I could have given about getting it in was to employ copious amounts of bad language and ensure you have a friend on hand to prevent you from hurling a lump hammer through the glass! I fully understand why people leave the chrome out but it does look great when it's in.
