Factory coating for engine bay, wheel arches and floorpan/chassis

Postby graeme109@hotmail » Wed Jan 04, 2017 10:44 pm

As per the title, I am trying to establish what the original coatings were in the:
  • Engine bay
    Under wheel arches
    Floorpan & chassis
    Rear valance behind bumper
I recall a textured coating in the engine bay and my father recalls seeing brush marks along the top of the chassis rails in the engine bay - all other areas had had the coating removed a long time ago so we can't recall what was used and where (as in, was the whole underside of the car including under arches, floorpan, chassis rails etc., coated with a stone chip/underseal of some sorts?)

Any pointers would be gratefully received, I want to get the period look correct even if using modern materials, little details such as a brush being run over the sealant at certain critical seams, as mentioned above are the sort of thing I need to know!!

My car arrived as a rusted rotten wreck on a trailer, very little of the steel remained, so no idea of the areas underneath. The engine bay had a very rough looking 'textured' finish. When I repainted it I sprayed it with stone chip and then body colour............unfortunately the stonechip doesn't like heat with the result it has all cracked and lookes a mess of indigo blue and light grey cracks, so wouldn't suggest you use that.
