Hi there, I'm hoping someone can put me right on this one!
Just about to kick off restoring ancillary parts for my Mk2 that is currently away at the body shop.
I'm starting with running gear so that I can drop the shell back on to four wheels once it's back, front axle is more than half complete, so I've started looking at the rear axle.
First conundrum I have is what colour to paint it ..... The axle having been cleaned up (didn't take much), looks to be red oxide overall and I have photos of another Mk2 that shows the same - can anyone confirm or otherwise that red oxide is indeed the original colour??
Mk2 axle - correct colour?

Hello Graeme,
I would say that black was the usual colour for both front suspension and rear axle.

Mine is black and seems original as it has disappeared in places!

Chaps - thank you very much for you replies, I actually prefer black - the car has been in the family since 1968 and in conversation with my father last night after I posted my question he remarked that he was certain the axle was black because he used to be under it frequently keeping an eye on a leak from the diff cover!
