Daimler V8 250 transmission fluid

Hello, unfortunately I didn't have any replies to my previous question so here goes again.
I have replaced the automatic gearbox fluiid in my Daimler V8 250. The sump was taken off and the fluid drained.
The recommended amount of oil is 8.5Lts but at about 6Lts it overflows from the filler/dipstick top. There dosn't appear to be an air lock so why can't I get the oil in.
After waiting 24hrs the level is still near the top of the distick!

I assume you have ran it to cycle the fluid through the box and in assuming that i have no idea why the level is not correct. Is it possible that the quantity is for a total rebuild is what you have and that if not stripped down the quantity is lower and that maybe the valve body retains some fluid resulting in overfilling when topped up.Just guessing really ,but maybe these are questions you could ask.Try the club contact for info,i`m sure you`ll be pointed in the right direction.
Sorry i can`t be more helpfull,good luck,Howard.

Hi Neil
I don't have any books at hand right now. But think the 8.5 litre would be for total change. As Howard said the valve block will take some and rest will probably be the torque converter, which you never mentioned changing.
If you can find out the volume of the converter and subtract that amount, it will give an idea of the volume required. I would suggest you then either drain some off or the lot and start again.
Once you have it up to the level, start the car up and move the selector through all the positions two or three time to ensure the oil has worked its way round all the system, then re-check the level and top up.
Perhaps other with more experiance of the auto boxes will post more helpfull information.

Hi, assume your car has either earlier Borg Warner DG or later type 35 box?
My MK2 has the DG box - I am pretty sure that your 'problem' is that the 8.5 litres quoted includes a substantial quantity of fluid which lives in the torque convertor - which you haven't drained.
I think the convertor has it's own drain plug (?) if you do want to drain it.
What I would do is empty the sump again and put in say 4 litres - run the engine with box in D (foot on brake) and allow the fluid to circulate/ warm up a bit - then check with the dipstick (mine has this on top of the box itself - ie you can check it from the driver's seat. Keep wiping the dipstick until you get a'clean reading' - that can take a while - then add a little fluid at a time to bring the level up to the correct mark on the dipstick (there is a about a pint between the bottom and top markings)
What you do want to avoid is overfilling the box - as that can damage the seals in theory - also, excess fluid will 'blow out' through the box vents and end up all over the bottom of the car - that happened on mine after my garage inexplicably added 2 litres of fluid to what was presumably a fairly full box - a lot of smoke in the rear view as the fluid ended up on the hot exhaust!
Hope that helps.

Hello folks.
Many thanks for the three replies thats exactly what I didn't do " empty the torque convertor" etc. I have now drained a litre or so off. and the level has retured somewhat.
Again many thanks
Neil
