oil leaks

Hi, I'm trying to identify and stem a number of oil leaks on my Mk2 ( 1961)

Quite a lot of oil, say (1/2 cup) has dripped out over a year from the overdrive unit. I cannot see from where but I'm told this is not unusual. The oil is very thin and I'm advised to try a straight 40 as this is thicker. Can ayone please adise if this sounds ok and do I simply buy ordinary 40 grade oil or is it special 'gearbox' oil?

Also if I drain the gearbox will it automatically drain the overdrive unit?

Many thanks

Hello Neil,

I would use the oil specified by Jaguar, not having my manual at the moment means I can't refer to it. Do not be tempted to use any additives as this can be detrimental to the overdrive operation.
My Triumph uses GL4 EP90, by the way.
Draining the gearbox will drain a lot of the overdrive but it's better to remove the big brass plug on the base of the overdrive and clean the filter and magnetic rings built into the plug.

Thanks Alex, Is there a purpose made tool for removing the brass plate?

Thanks Neil

Hello Neil,

it would be quite a large 'C' spanner, but a soft drift and a hammer will serve. It's not usually that tight.

My local gearbox specialist (well-established, with a very good reputation) told me to use engine oil in the Moss box with overdrive, so I've filled it with a modern (but traditional) 20-50.

Hi Neil
Terry's specialist is correct, as the Jaguar manual specifies engine oil to fill the gearbox/overdrive.
Best wishes, David
