Overdrive on 240.

I have had my 240 for 20+ years and never had any problem with o/d engaging until recently.

I now have intermittent engagement. Sometimes the unit will engage faultlessly and other times not at all. No obvious common factor like temperature or speed just totally random.

My local garage has carried out a number of visual checks, although I don't know if he has checked pressure.

The only clue I have is that the indicator warning lights in the binnacle don't work and of course when the o/d doesn't engage neither does the o/d warning light.

Does anyone have any ideas? My thoughts are along the line of a poor earth connection near the steering column that would affect both functions.

Firstly, I would suggest checking / topping up the gearbox oil level as first port of call.

When the overdrive is not working, can the solenoid be heard operating at all ?

If not then it points to your suggestion of faulty connection / switch. I would suggest stripping the cowling off and carry out a visual inspection of the wiring and connections to / from the switch.

There is also a switch mounted on the gearbox cover, linked into the system which prevents overdrive being switched on in the wrong gears, I believe. Again, this and / or the wiring could be a source of trouble.

Best of luck !

Thank you. Will try your ideas and any others that arise and report back.
