propshaft spline

Postby peterheywood52573 » Fri Jan 07, 2022 3:48 pm

The propshaft spline will not slide in and out, even when doused with release fluid and hit with a mallet. Looking on the internet, there seems to be many variants around.

There is a similar case on another forum. https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/prop-sh ... int/371513.
I might try heating the smaller tube.

Hello Peter,

unscrew the knurled ring from the main shaft and try some more releasing fluid. It may take some while and continue with the mallet as you soak it.There is a cork gasket\seal inside the joint cap which heat may damage? Ideally the joint wants to be split and cleaned and re lubricated.

Thanks again Alec.
I have been concentrating the release fluid at the red arrow. I can discern the staking at the red arrow, mentioned on the other forum. The blue and green portions look to be welded together. Certainly no knurled ring.
I was considering grinding out the staking (only with a Dremel). The propshaft cannot go back until its fixed, so I have got to do something but no rush.

Hello Peter,

strange, I had to blow up the image a bit to get a better view. Propshafts with splined sliding joints have a grease nipple normally and a knurled cap to stop the joint disconnecting with a seal to keep the grease in. I've never seen one quite like yours.
Is it definitely splined or possibly rubber bonded although the diameters appear to be too similar in size for that.

I have just looked at mine, and it has what I described. Also my parts book shows four different variations but all with a similar splined arrangement. None look like yours, the female part of the spline is the hardy spicer end and is significantly larger in diameter and longer than your picture shows.

Perahaps a call to Ken Jenkins may shed some light on the matter?

Hello again Peter,

just looked at your link which brings an E Type discussion. I would not expect that an E Type needs a sliding joint although some movement would be necessary to actually fit the shaft. There is no relative movement between the rear subframe and the gearbox in an E Type, unlike a Mk2 where the rear axle moves back and to with deflection of the suspension. Could your shaft be wrong for your car? Certainly it would not do the engine mounts any good if that's the case?

Puzzling,

This propshaft appeared on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133712191933. It claims to be off a MK2.
It looks outwardly similar to that on my car, apart from the boot around the spline. The boot on mine looks like a rolling diaphragm of some sort. I might as well have a go at freeing it, if the construction is the same as that on ebay it is going to be difficult to get oil between the splines.

Hello Peter,

if you look at the relative difference in diameter of the E Bay shaft, the part attached to the joint seems larger in diameter than the section of the shaft itself, going by the boot diameters. Yours is not.
What is the chassis number of your car?

Thanks for you interest Alec,
the chassis no is 168331DN. I am not sure what to do on this but I have plenty of other things on the go.

Hello Peter,

my parts book confirms that the E Bay item (C26658) is correct for your chassis number, I'm not sure what you have got as it looks nothing like any of the illustrations in the parts book?

Thanks Alec for the part number. I have just got the propshaft apart. It looks like it had a rolling diaphragm and that had siezed . The splines look OK and had not siezed. I might see what seals would fit.

Hello Peter,

there were no seals fitted , only on the cap type shaft.
You probably need:-
Gaiter for sliding joint part no 9411
Ring (Rubber) retainin gaiter to shaft part no 9412 2 off
Ring (Steel) retaining gaiter to yoke part no 9413

I don't know what the availability of these parts are however, good luck.
