Rear Axle Ratio

Hello All,
Further to my Quest to find a 3.31 ratio rear axle for my 1964 Mk2. I have been offered a 3.31 ratio Jaguar Salisbury LSD rear axle suitable for overhauling and hopefully, fitting into my MK2 diff housing.
The vendor is a reputable Jaguar Repairer but has not carried out such a conversion himself and is therefore not able to be certain that it will be suitable. He confirms that it is a normal Jaguar/Salisbury Diff out of a V12 E Type or V12 XJ
I would be grateful for any opinions on this as I don't want to purchase and pay for collection only to find it unsuitable.
Ecosse Lynx perhaps you could help as I believe that you have carried out this conversion yourself.

This sounds an interesting project. It's many years since I last overhauled any diffs but could not resist having a look in my Parts Books to see the similarities.

I can well understand your reticence not to waste money.

I had to go right back to a Mk 7 manual to find a solid axle to compare with the one on offer

Just a note - the book says 3.31 = 43/13 teeth.

You don't say, is your car a 3.8 with power lock ?

A good starting point would be to see if your half shaft splines match those in the new Differential side gear. It may be possible to swop the differential side gears or even transfer the crown wheel and pinion. I think there could be a number of options.

Although my instincts tell me it is possible there clearly needs to be a lot of measuring to ensure a successful outcome.

Will you be carrying out the rebuild yourself.

Hi Oldtimer,
Thanks for your comments. My car is a 3.8 Mk2 and is fitted with a Salisbury limiter slip diff, hence my hope that the 3.31 crown wheel and pinion (43/13 teeth) will be able to be mounted in to my current diff case without too much modification.
