Clunk!

Postby gungehead » Thu May 19, 2016 2:56 pm

Hi,
Straight to the point - if I pull away quickly, I get a clunk that seems to come from underneath the car. If I pull away normally, no clunk.
It sounds like it is to the rear of the gearbox or a bit further back. It only happens on pulling away never on deceleration.

I will look underneath at the end of the gearbox/overdrive/prop shaft area over the weekend. Anyone had similar issues and any suggestions as to what may be causing the problem?

I have a later all synchro gearbox, overdrive and 3.8 engine.

Thanks in advance for the help

Just taken her for another spin and listened more carefully and thought about it a bit more and I think it may be the prop shaft. How much wear does there have to be in a UJ on a prop shaft to make an audible clunk?
Could it be a gearbox mount?

Hello Dave,

if you can feel any play at all in the U.J.s then they need replacing, and also a check of the engine nad gearbox mountings is wise. If the gearbox mounting has been soaked in oil then it will have deteriorated?

Hi, the propshaft would tend to 'clunk' on take up and power off situations. I would think it could be the gearbox support letting things move but you will need to see if it has failed by jacking the box up gently as it is not always obvious because of the position it rests in. Otherwise would need to look for any areas that are chafed/clean due to rubbing and you can of course then twist the propshaft to see if there is any play.
I did have a noise that caused me to examine all areas and found that the panhard rod bush had gone which caused a thump on the body in the rear seat area but it seemed to travel down to under the front seats which threw me for a bit.
Best of luck with the search.

Hi.
Not my normal forum for posting but I saw the thread and a little bell went 'ding' in my head.
Probably an incorrect diagnosis but: (and apologies to all if I am wrong)
Many moons ago a friend had a Spitfire and the splines on one of the rear wheels were so badly worn that the drive shafts actually went round whilst the car made no forward progress whatsoever.
Just before that it was making clu nking noises.
If you can imagine a dentist going at your pearly whites with a jack hammer and a large person is screaming Opera in both ears then that is noise that came out when he attempted to set off.
But it started with a 'clunk'.
