1963 Daimler V8 2.5 manual od numbers

Postby FredS » Fri Oct 18, 2013 4:07 pm

During my restoration works I had to change important subjects such as the engine and the gearbox, and it is the latter about which I’m interested to learn more:
The following numbers were found on the manual 4-speed + overdrive box:
KVN144
Laycock Sheffield Overdrive 28/61743/004370
and on the tail: 61147
Could you possibly tell me what type of gearbox I’m using?
My speedometer gives erratic readings (as compared to what my satnav tells me I actually drive) I’m wondering whether my gearbox is actually giving the ‘wrong’ signal through the (new) cable to the speedometer and whether I can possibly adjust either of those.

Hi FredS,

I've looked in the JAGUAR MkII manual and Haynes manual and the prefix KVN isn't listed in them so is either a prefix for Daimler or of a different gearbox, sorry can't help on that score.

The wildly inaccurate speedo may well be down to the cable (kinked) unless it is a new one or the old speedo itself.

In my case a short while after re-commissioning the car (after being off the road for 30 years) and on the motorway heading to a friend in Scotland there was a scream and a 'thunk' and no more speedo readings (rather disturbing when a long way from home). It transpired the speedo had seized (any previous lubricant had dried up) and snapped the cable. I got a local guy 'John Ostick' to rebuild the speedo and with the measurements I gave him, diameter of the tyre and the distance covered for one wheel rotation, it is the most accurate speedo of all our cars (checked over the police mile and tomtom).

hope that helps,
Brian
