Hello, I have an automatic 340 Mk2 and have a question regarding compatability. Will the Borg Warner 35 gearbox (which is used on many cars) from another make eg Triumph Rover, fit the 340? I guess the bell housing is specific to the Mk2, what I want to know is whether the gearbox has standard dimensions to which each car company fitted its own bell housing to match the engine of their make? My reason is I can buy a BW35 gearbox for another make.
Also the torque convertor is it specific to the Mk 2? or can another that fits the BW35 also be used?
Thanks
Mike

Hi there
I see your posting was some time ago so guess you've already sorted somethng out but just in case...
I've had my car for 12 years and for about 10 years of that I had a problem with the gearbox..torque converter broke etc...had it replaced/gerabox overhauled etc..it broke again and again and again and again and again...one garage had it back about 6 times and another garage had it 2 or 3 times...I've lost count. Balanced the prop/ changed it for a single piece one/changed the flywheel/balanced the engine/checked the ujs etc..even put another second hand BW35 in after overhauling it...but still it broke again and again. This was my achilees heel on an otherwise great car. On 3 occassions it even smashed up the bellhousing. Eventually I stopped using the car as a result.
I'd been told by numerous people including mechanics that these old BW boxes are rubbish and to upgrade it to a more modern version. My own humble opinion was that there was SOMETHING else wrong and I'd prob pay out just to have new box go.
Anyway...recently (ish) I decided now was the time to start using it again regularly ..and guess what...I had a problem with the gearbox...so this time I called GRAHAM WHITEHOUSE AUTOS in Halesowen, West Midlands...I'd previously decided not to use them because they are not exactly cheap...but THEY KNOW THEIR STUFF!! Also, they bought out Borg Warner years ago so have all their old stock and manuals etc.
You're right the BW35 was fitted into many other cars...each having slight differences in the contents. Anyway, cut a long story short...they fixed mine...and in doing so discovered that the replacement box we had put in was from a Land Rover and they said that the small differences between the different models of 35 which many think don't matter, actually DO matter hugely!!! Also my flywheel was put inback to front!!!!! I asked how could this be...after all it had been to 2 other garages and in fact been replaced..but they said that it may be that whoever had just put it in the same way they took it out without knowing differently and that 'you have to know what you are looking for'. So, they replaced the necessary components within my existing box to make it as it should be and confidently stated it wont go wrong again.
Now I have to admit I was very sceptical, especially bearing in mind the history...but you know what, seems they were right. I also had a drumming on the bottom of the car, right from the time I first had it...most noticeable at motorway speeds...and nobody could tell me what it was (to my novice mind it sounded like the propshaft was bent and banging on bottom of car (despite having been replaced in an earlier attempt to isolate and identify the cause)...and you know what...that has completely gone!!!!!
You see, if you need any help...they are the experts! Don't go to anyone else....they have the documents and parts to MAKE the inards of your box correct. As for changing to a more modern version...why do it? Even they agree that running corrrectly it is a very sweet box and in fact rare. Please don't put another 35 in either without KNOWING it is for the 340 or MK2 Jag (actually I've been told they did not go in the MK2 which in itself casts doubt over the originality of my car...bought as MK2).
Since then I've done a few thou' miles and been down to Bordeoux etc (1500 miles 4 days) so I reckon they're right - it aint gonna break.
Sorry for such a long message but not sure why you're gearbox was requiring attention/changing and would hate to think you may end up in same situation as me.
All the best and happy Jagging
