Sump removal with engine in place?

The Haynes manual says it is possible but the consensus seems to be that the engine should come out.
I have had the engine out of the car and put it back. The engine has since refused to turn. I decided to investigate with the engine in the car. I had to remove the sump and cylinder head, in order to remove the timing cover. I now want to remove the sump completely, to clean-out any debris in it.
I have been reading an older post viewtopic.php?f=112&t=10885&p=59531&hil ... val#p59531 . The member seems to have replaced the sump without completely removing it from between the subframe and the block. I want to make sure there is no debris in there and clean the flanges. For that I need to get the sump pan completely out.
I thought maybe, I could lift just the front of the engine by 6" or so and slip the sump out over the subframe. Would this work? Or would I then need to lower the gearbox as well as raise the engine?
