Sump removal with engine in place?

Postby peterheywood52573 » Tue Aug 22, 2023 7:45 pm

The Haynes manual says it is possible but the consensus seems to be that the engine should come out.
I have had the engine out of the car and put it back. The engine has since refused to turn. I decided to investigate with the engine in the car. I had to remove the sump and cylinder head, in order to remove the timing cover. I now want to remove the sump completely, to clean-out any debris in it.

I have been reading an older post viewtopic.php?f=112&t=10885&p=59531&hil ... val#p59531 . The member seems to have replaced the sump without completely removing it from between the subframe and the block. I want to make sure there is no debris in there and clean the flanges. For that I need to get the sump pan completely out.

I thought maybe, I could lift just the front of the engine by 6" or so and slip the sump out over the subframe. Would this work? Or would I then need to lower the gearbox as well as raise the engine?

Hello Peter,

have you considered lowering the front suspension sub frame? I supect that would be easier than trying to lift the engine sufficiently?
I would first try that without disconnecting either the steering or the flexible brake lines, there may be sufficient flex to give you the clearance you require?

Thanks Alec,
I have considered lowering the subframe but that would be new territory for me. It might be more straightforward to take the engine and gearbox out........ again!
I was hoping that there might have been something behind the Haynes statement on what was possible with the engine in the car. Maybe those involved dropping the subframe.

Hello Peter,

from that I take it you don't use the recommended engine removal procedure which involves removing the front sub frame?
