2.4 manual no overdrive but with uprated carbs

HI There,
I am currently stripping my first mk2 2.4 and going through the restoration, so far I have rebuilt the rear end, axle suspension brakes, fuel tank, etc and I am presently on the front stripping the suspension and rebuilding that, I am hoping to get the steering and suspension back in the car in a couple of weeks and want to look at the engine and gearbox whilst it is at the PaintShop.

Prior to starting the restoration I rebuilt the carbs to get it started to see what I had to deal with, it started no probs and there were no unusual noises. My question is what can I do to check engine and gearbox operation or wear as I don't want to put it back if they need a rebuild, as I haven't driven the car I have no idea, It is meant to be low miles and a good engine, but that is here say, the oil is immaculate but again here say. I am assuming removing a cam shell and a crank shell would be one idea, as for the gearbox I have no idea other than to turn each shaft for noises.
Any help in testing the quality of the engine and gearbox would be really helpfull.

I am normally a receiver of advise on this forum but here goes.
I was able to strap and engine (not Jaguar 6 cyl) to a pallet and run a compression test. This showed up a cracked valve and then later a stuck piston ring. This can be done on an assembled engine and gives an insight into its condition without disassembly .
Other potential problems such as oil leaks, low oil pressure etc require taking bits off.
