Dip stick on engine came away!

Hi there,
whilst checking my engine oil having done a round trip to Bolton to get power steering installed the to the dip stick holder came away? It doesn't seem to want to push in so is only held in place by the dip stick itself.

Does anyone know how it attaches as i'm not sure if its broken or quite how it attaches? Any suggestions advice greatly appreciated

Hello Keith,

while I can't remember ever seeing that, the usual dipstick tube fits in a drilling in the block. Could your have corroded and broken where it should be inserted into the block?

If you have a close look at the bottom of the tube , that should fit in the block , you should see if it has rusted away , the dipstick holder is a tight fit , and fits in the block around 2 inches I think , if it has rusted the only way to get the bit out the block is to drift it out , that's a sump off job , to remove the tube , my 3.4 engine has no holder , long as the dipstick is reading the correct oil level , its no real issue !
Ps I would say the tube is in 2 in your case , as if the tube had come out , the dipstick would show no oil on it .

When i looked at the end it did seem fatigued! It looks like i have another winter job when i do an oil change. I assume that you can still get a replacement dip stick tube?

SC Parts do one for the XJ6 , not sure if its the same size , at around £62 .

I am 99% sure the 240 never had the dipstick holder tube fitted , but had a tube in the block of the same size , just flush with the top of the block , so you could just find a 240 dipstick , as they are shorter , then when you do your oil change , just make sure the level mark is the same !

Thanks for the advice. in the end my mate machined a tube sleeve to go into the old dip stick tube and into the block job done!

My dipstick tube fractured where it fits into the block. I used a 10mm taper tap to start the thread then a second cut finally a plug tap. Dipping each tap in grease first to stop any dwarf dropping into sump. Then with piece of stud a tube and nut drew the broken piece out. Just need to keep withdrawing taps cleaning and re-greasing to ensure no cuttings drop down. It worked for me.

Correction on my last message I think I used 3/8 unf taps not 10mm
