LUCAS SPORT COIL

Have fitted one of these to my Mk2 3.4 along with new distributor cap, plugs , points and condenser. Non ballast resistor ignition.

All seems good so far, has anyone else got observations to make on the Lucas Sport Coil, good or bad ?

I've fitted one of these to my 2.4l, along with a new set of ignition leads and distributor cap. She now starts first time, every time and it was much easier to get the carburettors sorted. Perhaps the new leads would have been enough on their own, and the old coil was the original 1966 one, but this set up has certainly not given me any problems.

Spoke too soon! Less than 400 miles, and I had to come home on a flatbed yesterday after the low tension side of my Lucas Sport coil went open circuit at 70 mph. Probably bad luck.....

Hello all,

I've used a Lucas sports coil on my 2.5 P.I. without problems for many years, but there is no reason that it will give better performance. It may help in conditions where the required voltage at the plug is higher than the standard coil can produce. It is the plug that determines what voltage it sparks at and not the coil, e.g. if the plug needs 20Kv to spark that's what voltage the coil gives irrespective if it is capable of a higher voltage. (I was not aware of this when I bought my sports coil)

Hi there the Lucas sport coil question is an interesting one,I have one fitted to my 1967 Daimler 2.5 v8,along with a lumenition optronic ignition (both fitted by the previous owner), as stated already in this post the sport coil is a non ballast coil,and has so far given me no problems although the furthest I've travelled in one journey so far is about a ninety mile round trip,I called Merlin Motorsport (a lumenition agent) and they advise that a matching lumenition MS4 coil together with the supplied ballast resister is fitted to avoid premature coil failure,so it's an interesting subject, but I suppose if you are running the standard ignition set up the sport coil should be ok,but as a further aside an auto electrician I spoke to recently said that the quality of some aftermarket coils is very debatable!!

Very interesting gents. I currently have a 123 ignition system fitted, and am of the opinion, that I most probably will not benefit from the sports coil. So a Lucas standard coil should suffice.
Great lesson(by the way) from Piman on the interactions between the workings of the coil & spark plug!
