Hello Paul;,

certainly the clock should be earthed, whether it is earthed via the tachometer body as the light will also be earthed via the body I would expect? Perhaps the usual earth via a ring lug to the instrument clamp is missing?

These clocks are notorious for not working and I remember some one could convert them but I don't remember who?

Green wires are live from the ignition fed fuse, does your fuel and temperature gauge work as there should be voltage regulator (Small metal box similar to a relay) which is fed from a green. It's sometimes easier to see what is not working as the green wires feed quite a few devices.

Just a small point,

I needed my speedo rebuilt as it went spectaculary BANG on a trip to Glasgow many years ago (the rest of the trip was using the tacho for speed!).

I had the speedo rebuilt in Yorkshire and the clock as well, I was told at the time that the clocks frequently went wonky after a year. As this seemed a bit useless I never connected it. As I also changed to a capilliary oil pressure gauge but mounted it into the lower radio panel so I found and fitted a 2" electric clock in its place. This has given very good service over 13 odd years, but is not original.

The original clock is ready for the cars next owner!!

Thank you again for the good advice. Both gauges work fine so all I will have to do is earth the clock etc. Funnily enough my clock always used to work! Lets hope it does as I put it all back. There is a spare black bullet connector which is an earth so I will install a ring connector to earth the items.
I have seen replacement digital clocks but they appear expensive so will leave as is. Onwards with the dash rebuild. Maybe look at some spares as I am visiting the PC Restoration Show at the NEC on 5th March.

Hi Paul,
At the back of the clock alongside the centre connection for the Time Adjuster cable is the negative feed termina (this detail is etched into the back of the clock). Attached to this terminal with a screw, should be a short brown wire with a ring connection on the clock end and a bullet connection on the other. A block rubber insulation sleeve covers the screw and ring. On the other end, using a bullet connection connect the purple feed which coms from the harness with 3 other wires i.e the purple feed for the clock and a black blue, a black brown and a red yellow which attached to the Rev counter terminals.
The Rev Counter and Clock are both earthed by attaching a short black wire with ring connections of both ends. These fit over the threaded bar after the leg bracket for securing the instruments fo the facia are in place. hen tighten down using the knurled nuts and spring washer on the threaded bar. should have said that ther is a black earth wire coming from the harness with a ring connection on it . This attached to the threaded bar also and bonds/earths both instruments together.
On the right hand side of the dash apeture for the Rev/Speedo, adjacent to the A post, four green wires exit from the braided harness. These attach together using a double bullet connection. If you look closely you may be able to distinguish which is 'in' and which 'out'.

Anthony, that is very helpful. I have found the wires you mention but am missing a ring end earth. I will install one to the local earth point which seems to be located just above the location fixing for the steering.
Many thanks,

Paul,
Glad to have been of assistance. I typed that previous message in a hurry so apologies for for the typo's. I'm sure you understood when I said 'block rubber' that I meant 'Black rubber'. Also, when I referred to the 4 four green wires and checking which was 'in' and which was out' I meant that they might be of slightly different tones of green so you could seed where the two looms were joining ie one feed on to the other.

Anthony.
