I am not adverse to fitting an Optima red top, while keeping a more ‘traditional’ option on the bench.
What is the advice?

Whatever you decide, make sure the battery is compatible with your charging method, whether that be a dynamo or alternator. More modern batteries I find, are hard to impossible, to recover from deep discharge.
Some two years ago I had at least three new batteries from different makers, fail within days of each other and finally after consulting one of my professional friends I used Bosch traditional batteries (I have two on my S type) with original dynamo charging. I have no doubt that these batteries are not made by Bosch, but they do the job well.

Just replaced mine with a new Exide model. Works great and good value.

Re: Mark 2 battery
Hi, does anyone know the package sizes that will fit the mk2? I have been looking at #27, #335 and #031. The required size is 300 x 175 x 220 (h) but you cannot search using that.
I am also not sure of the terminal arrangement, as websites do not show a top picture.

Hava a look at the Tayna site, you can search under many options including dimensions. There also a great company to order from.

Bob Bate just replaced mine when it failed in his workshop as mentioned above. It is an ExideEB712 , it is the correct fit and the roght battery terminals. Rating is 670 amps. Just over £50 delivered to him.
