2 problems/challenges

Postby metal_mickey » Wed Jan 16, 2008 6:26 pm

Hello, I have a 1969 340 auto and I have a couple of questions. Recently the car has been cutting out, rather than missing only when going up long hills. As soon I get to the top or a slope down hill then the car picks up and all is ok with the world again. This also only happens after 7 or 8 miles have gone by. I suspect a fuel problem but don't know. As I say its not so much a missing problem rather she tend to die and you have to ease off the throttle for her to continue, obviously reduce speed. Fuel consumption also seems to be more that before.

The second question relates to the automatic gearbox. I was told by the sellar (about 18 months ago) that I should alway engage D2 and not D1. When under way from the D2 position she only changes up once. Is this correct i.e. is she changing into top gear? Only I feel when driving her that she should move up another gear. Does D2 mean she starts in D2 and in fact when she changes she moves into third, or is there a problem in that she is not changing up?

Any idea?

Personally, I would nearly always use 1st gear (D1) to pull away, but to quote from the owners manual "D2 - this position restricts the forward range to 2nd and 3rd gears and should be used for all normal driving except when maximum acceleration below approx. 25 mph is required. This drive range should always be used when travelling on icy or loose road surfaces where kicking down into 1st may cause wheelspin."

With regards to the cutting out, make sure that the fuel filter isn't blocked and see if theres enough fuel being delivered to the carbs. The pick-up filter in the fuel tank (attached to the drain plug) can become obstructed with rust and debris, so try draining the tank and checking this if you think it could be a problem.

I'd also consider checking the points gap and changing the condenser if the problem persists.

cuting out

Postby pikeydad » Fri Feb 29, 2008 7:14 pm

HI, just a thought ,when i read your posting it reminded me of a Moriss Cowley i owned in a past life. It would sudenly die after it got warm after a few miles and when it cooled it would run perfectly again. In this instance it turned out to be a faulty ignition condenser in the distributor. Of course this may be completely off track but i thought i would mention it,you never know. All the best ,Phil.

Fuel or is it electrical? Car can cut out on a hill

Postby metal_mickey » Fri Feb 29, 2008 11:18 pm

Thanks Phil, I will check that out although If I stop with the engine still running even for only 30 seconds or so and then pull away she is fine. Get to the top of a hill and from then on she runs very sweet even unde acceleration. Come to another hill of consequence and the same problem arrises! Very frustrating.....

had the same problem with a mk2 and that turned out to be the disc filter that sits in the head of the fuel bowl thats bolted to the inner wing in the engine bay.did not find the problem to start with because you have to prise the filter out from underneath the head of the filter housing and when i did i found it to be clogged with rust particles after cleaning same and refitting the car ran like a dream.......worth a try...regards alan

Brilliant answer, I now have a car I can enjoy again! It was as you describe and after renewing all, she performs like a dream. Now I only have to fix the rev counter and get a new speedo cable and that should be the mechanical side sorted.

On another issue a few months ago I read in one of the Jag magazines (I think) an aricle on veneering. Anyone answer this question?

Once again thanks Alan22.
