Mk 2 restoration,

Postby piman » Fri Feb 05, 2021 5:07 pm

Hello all,

finally got back to continuing my restoration and for the last few days I have been stripping the interior.
I'm amazed at the very fiddly work that went into building these cars, inaccessible fasteners for much that's behind the dash, the fight I had to remove the wiring loom and what surprised me the most is the number of small pieces of sound deadening material behind the dash, not only small pieces but double layers of them.

Lots of rust to replace with good metal, although quite a bit has already been done especially the rear of the car as I needed to return the strength so I can get the body on my stand to do the rest of the welding.

When I did some work to mine I could not believe the amount of 'dust' created by the sound insulation. Good job I wore a mask! I know it was not original but I replaced it with the stick on variety readily available. Similar for that under the headling when I replaced that but I used a proprietary Toyota material to do that.
A bit cold at present to do much though, a sign of old age as I never used to think about it!

Hello Paul,

it wasn't particularly dusty, and I shan't be refitting that sort of insulation but the more modern and much thinner type.

But that is some time in the future.

Hello all,

continuing with the strip down, a bare shell now and I'm in the process of removing the doors.
Once again I don't know what Jaguar were thinking. You can't remove the doors with the hinges attached to them. To remove the hinges, as I want to, the doors are unbolted from the hinges then the hinges can be removed. I checked the (Jaguar) workshop manual and that is the procedure.

Also the C post wiring has clips to hold it in position within the pillar, not difficult to remove but not normal these days, I don't think.

Afternoon all, just popped onto the forum for some inspiration and noted this thread. Is your resto’ ongoing?
I ask as I am a few years into my own mk2 restoration that will be a full ground up job conducted in a small garage.

Hello Ashe,

a lot of progress made. I had the body sandblasted and epoxy primed and am in the process of filling\priming. This job is taking a lot of time as getting the body smooth and to the right contours is difficult, for me at least.
The engine\gearbox\rear axle and front subframe are all rebuilt The wood work has been redone completely and the bumpers went to the chromers last week. I have a new interior kit and hope to have it finished sometime this spring.
It's been slow but fairly steady.
