Parts Cost From Garage?

Postby triumphboy » Fri Nov 13, 2020 2:14 pm

Hello all
Could anyone please advise me? How much is reasonable for a garage to charge for parts?
Take for example this alternator upgrade that can be bought as a 'punter' from SNG Barratt for £391,72 inc VAT: https://bit.ly/35sAdcT
If I ask a garage to supply and fit this for me, what would you expect is reasonable for them to charge for the supply of the part? I would have thought they would be able to buy at trade and sell to me at around £391 retail and make their margin there? Or could they reasonably charge more? And if so, how much more might be deemed reasonable?
Any insights/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

Hi, it really depends on the garage and the relationship you have with them. I am fortunate to have a local independent who will allow me to procure the parts at the best possible price I can find them and they will fit for just their labour costs.

A decent local independent wants repeat business, especially from owners of older cars that get lots of TLC, so will not generally apply a significant mark-up to procured parts. Often they will quote you the cost that they are quoted. by the factor.

I have the same arrangement with my local garage as Jim and it works fine although of course they only guarantee their work, the item itself has to be covered by the supplier guarantee.
