Torque wrench settings

Postby BookerME » Wed Sep 26, 2018 10:22 am

I’m looking for some guidance on torque wrench settings for bolts in and around the brakes, suspension and steering areas of my 420.
I found this on an update to an old Forum post update from last year.
Has anyone got any views on this or anything better please?
Cheers, Mac.

The majority of bolts on Jaguars are UNF, or UNC where they go into alloy. 1/4 UNF takes a 7/16 AF spanner; 5/16 is 1/2 AF ; 3/8 is 9/16 AF ; 7/16 is 5/8 AF . If you take the following as dry settings you will not go far wrong , and take 20 to 25 % less if for any reason you are lubricating the threads ,

7/16 AF 12 - 15 lbs.ft
1/2 AF 17-20
9/16 AF 30-35
5/8 AF 55

Hi Mac

You may be quoting a string I started last year. For completeness and other readers the link to that string (giving context) is viewtopic.php?f=219&t=12282

One of the important factors to bear in mind is the type of material you are clamping with the fastening (cast, alloy etc.) In the case of suspension that will probably be all/mostly steel.

I have resorted to Haynes on more than one occasion where the data is not available from Jaguar. Haynes give the following suspension fastening values for the series XJs which, if you cant find anything specifically for the 420, is probably near enough.

Thanks Robbie, it was your post I found, I was going to message you but you picked it up anyway.
That's good additional info, thanks very much.

Mac.
