Seal between gearbox cover and floor pan?

Postby alan12666 » Tue Mar 07, 2017 1:36 pm

Afternoon all,

Due to having a poorly starter, and needing to do some detective work on a malfunctioning overdrive, I've removed the centre tunnel fibreglass cover over the gearbox on my 1961 Mk2 3.4. Those two problems are well on the way to being sorted but I've created a new one - the cork-type sealing gasket between the tunnel cover and floor pan broke up when I removed the cover, so I need a new one. It looks like the original was a collection of pre-cut parts stuck to the floor pan. DMG & SNG Barratt can't help.

Does anyone know where I can source original-type parts, or is it time for me to start cutting and fitting some hand-made from suitable sheet material?

Thanks

Alan

Hi,

I have never seen a cork gasket on my car or on the other two covers I seem to aquire, they all had a mastic type substance on them and the one on the car uses the same mastic that came off!

Yes, and the other two spares are also fibre glass. I refitted the best one and may have slung one of the others.

Well thats every oz of oil replaced and after bleeding the brakes a second time the car is back in service, it feels nice to be driving it now the salt has gone.

How about your XJ12, on the road soon?

Gents,

Thanks - I'm guessing the cork sealing had been added sometime in the car's former life in Australia / Japan. I don't want to stick it all with mastic so I'll get hold of some cork and do my best to replace what was there.

Just waiting of new pinion kit for the starter from DMG then I can get it all rebuilt. Nicely timed now the weather is improving!

Thanks again

Alan
